When traveling from Kathmandu to Markhu, there are mainly two well-known routes. One is through Kathmandu-Thankot-Godam-Chitlang-Markhu, and the other is through Kathmandu-Pharphing-Chitlang-Markhu

Kathmandu – Thankot – Godam – Chitlang – Markhu

This is the route if you want a quick and scenic route from Kathmandu to Markhu. The two locations are about 31.3 kilometers apart, making it a perfect day trip from Kathmandu. To begin your journey to Markhu, you must arrive in Thankot and then travel to Godam. The trail from Kathmandu to Markhu via Thankot offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area. As you travel along the scenic road, you can see the stunning views of lush forests, sloping hills, and serene valleys.

Depending on your transportation mode, the trip usually takes four hours. Similarly, there are rest stops where you can eat something and enjoy the scenery. You can take a quick break at one of the many teahouses or restaurants along the way and eat delicious regional cuisine. You can also hike when you arrive at Godam or from Chitlang. As you travel through the beautiful countryside, you will pass several traditional villages, historic temples and charming villages.

Kathmandu – Pharphing – Chitlang – Markhu

If you want a more scenic journey, consider taking the Dakshinkali route. It may be a bit longer, but the beautiful panoramas along the way make it worth it. The distance between Kathmandu and Markhu via Dakshinkali road is about 63.3 kilometers. The Dakshinkali path goes through the stunning Kathmandu Valley, providing breathtaking views of terraced fields, small villages, and lush green hills. It is the ideal route for those who want to see Nepal’s natural beauty while traveling slowly. 

The Dakshinkali route is a maintained proper highway, and the journey typically takes four hours, depending on traffic. The path also passes by the iconic Dakshinkali temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali. Therefore, the Dakshinkali route is an excellent choice for experiencing Nepal’s natural beauty and culture despite the longer journey to Markhu.



Public vehicles are the way to go if you’re looking for an affordable and convenient way to get to Markhu from Kathmandu. You can take a bus to Markhu in Kathmandu from the Kalanki Bus Park or the New Bus Park, which has frequent bus services.

Most trips take 4 to 5 hours, and you can enjoy the scenic beauty of the surroundings. When you arrive in Godam, you can take a jeep or hike to your destination. A jeep ride is an excellent choice for those who want an easy and quick trip. The hike could take up to four hours, depending on your pace and fitness level, but the jeep ride can take about 1.5 hours to reach Markhu.

You can travel from Kathmandu to Markhu by private vehicle, taxi, or jeep. This option is more pleasant and convenient than local buses, making it perfect for the family and medium-sized groups. You can have a more personalized experience by hiring this transportation mode, which allows you to manage your schedule and make stops.

Even though hiring a taxi or a private car is more expensive than taking a local bus, the additional ease and convenience make it worth the extra cost. A Jeep is an excellent option for medium-sized groups because it can carry up to seven passengers simultaneously, whereas a car can only take four.

Major Attractions Along the Route 

Mohini Jharana

Mohini Waterfall, situated in Markham, Kulekhani, is known as Thadokhola Jharana and Kulekhani Jharana. This is one of the best spots near the Kathmandu Valley to spend days off or weekends with family or friends. The amazing waterfall is surrounded by gorgeous greenery and animals, making you feel like a natural swimming pool. It is situated southwest of Kathmandu, in the central area between Hetauda (almost 50 km) and Kathmandu (nearly 60 km). Many travelers visit this spot weekly to appreciate the beauty of the site.

Kulekhani Dam

This man-made dam, known as Kulekhani or Indra Sarovar, was built to generate energy. However, it also has a unique environment and breathtaking natural beauty that attracts numerous visitors annually. When we first see Kulekhani Lake, the spectacular view from the top of the dam side captures our hearts. Kulekhani Lake/Dam replaces Fewa Lake for the people of Kathmandu and Hetauda.

The Pharping-Phakhel roadway connects the Markhu with the Kulekhani Dam. After arriving at Kalanki in Kulekhani, follow the road to the left to reach the Kulekhani Dam, which the Nepal Army guards.


Chitlang has old Newari houses from the Lichchavi period. In Chitlang, you can see the stunning village, historic Newari homes, artwork, architecture, stupas, and chaityas. One of Nepal’s old goat cheese factories can be found on the way to Chitlang. It is hidden away in a lush, green forest known for its naturalistic beauty. You can eat organic foods here while you are on your vacation. 

Bheda Farm

If you’re visiting Markhu or Chitlang, stop at Bheda Farm (goat farm). It is very gorgeous in the springtime. The hill is covered with lush grass and can be reached in 30 minutes from Markhu. There are two choices for going here: driving or hiking. Driving from Markhu to Bheda farm takes around 10 minutes. The location is ideal for exploring and enjoying nature.
