Overview

Kyajo Ri Peak Expedition (6186m) in the Everest region offers a unique challenge for mountaineers seeking a more demanding expedition. Unlike its neighboring peaks, such as Island Peak or Lobuje East, known for their more accessible routes and straightforward ascents, Kyajo Ri requires a higher level of physical fitness and technical skill.

Standing tall at 6,186m/20,296ft, Kyajo Ri Peak is a semi-technical 6000m peak between Thame and Gokyo Valley Trek. Less popular and unclimbed than the neighboring peaks, Kyajo Ri provides the thrill of climbing a 6000m peak in a pure expedition style.

Opened to climbing in 2002, Kyajo Ri was climbed for the first time by a Franco/ British team. The Commercial Kyajo Ri climbing route is through the southwest ridge. The Southeast Ridge is more challenging, but it can also be attempted from the northeast face.

Note: Kyajo Ri is a challenging expedition that involves significant technical climbing at high altitudes. Thus, Climbers on this expedition need to be in excellent physical shape and have basic mountaineering skills. Summit day is very long and tiring.

Itinerary

We will be warmly welcomed at Tribhuwan International Airport by a representative from Naata Travels and Adventure, who will hold a placard with your name for easy identification. After meeting the representative, we will be transferred to your designated hotel. Once settled in, you will have the option to relax and prepare for the upcoming adventure. You might explore the local area this evening or enjoy a relaxing dinner at the hotel.

Day 2: Trip Preparation Day

We will visit the Nata Travels and Adventure office in the afternoon for a comprehensive pre-trip briefing. During this time, you will meet your climbing guide and fellow climbers. Our guide will carefully check your climbing equipment to ensure everything is in good condition and that nothing essential is missing. This will also be a great opportunity to address any last-minute questions or concerns about the trek and climb.

Day 3: Flight to Lukla and Trek to Phakding

We will embark on an early morning flight to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, which is renowned for its thrilling landing on a narrow strip at the edge of a hill. Upon arrival, we will organize and pack our climbing gear. We will then start our hike towards Phakding. The trek today will be relatively short, allowing us to adjust to the altitude gradually. If you are interested, we can visit a nearby monastery to experience local culture. We will spend the night in Phakding, where you will be able to relax and enjoy the serene surroundings.

  Maximum Altitude : 2,800 meters

Day 4: Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Following breakfast, we will begin our hike towards Namche Bazaar, passing through the entry point of Sagarmatha National Park. The trail will take us along the Dudh Koshi River and through tranquil forests of pine fir and juniper. We will enjoy stunning views of Mt. Thamserku on our right and, if the weather is clear, glimpses of Everest through the Lhotse and Nuptse ridges. We will cross five suspension bridges along the way, adding to the adventure. Upon reaching Namche Bazaar, we will settle in for the night and have the opportunity to explore this bustling hub.

  Maximum Altitude : 3,438 meters

Day 5: Namche Bazaar: Acclimatization Day

Today will be dedicated to acclimatization, which is crucial for adjusting to the high altitude. We will recommend staying active rather than resting idly. You can explore the charming town of Namche Bazaar, visit local shops, or enjoy a coffee at a local café. For a closer view of Everest, we will hike to the Everest View Hotel. If you prefer a longer hike, we can journey to Khumjung Village, which will take approximately 5-6 hours. There, we will visit Edmund Hillary School and Khumjung Monastery, which is rumored to house the head of the Yeti. This day will help us adapt to the altitude and prepare for the upcoming climb.

  Maximum Altitude : 3,438 meters

Day 6: Namche Bazaar to Mende

We will start our hike from Namche Bazaar towards Thame, which will be a relatively easy trek. The path from Namche to Thame will be gradual, providing a gentle ascent. From Thame, we will continue with a short, steady climb until we reach the village of Mende. The hike will offer scenic views of the surrounding landscape. Upon arrival in Mende, we will settle into our accommodations and enjoy the serene environment. This evening, you will have time to rest and prepare for the next day’s trek.

  Maximum Altitude : 3,736 meters

Day 7: Mende to Kyajo Ri Base Camp

After leaving Mende, we will diverge from the main trail and follow a faint yak trail that leads us over a couple of passes. This path will take us into the Kyajo Drangka, an isolated valley located south of Kyajo Ri. Throughout this journey, we will be treated to spectacular views of the Himalayan range, including Thamserku, Khumbila, Kwangde, Kusum Kangaru, and Pachharmo. We will arrive at Kyajo Ri Base Camp, situated between a rocky mountain and a rivulet on a flat surface. We will stay the night at the base camp, preparing for the climbs ahead.

  Maximum Altitude : 4,550 meters

Day 8: Rest Day at Kyajo Ri Base Camp

We will dedicate this day to acclimatization, ensuring we are properly prepared for the ascent. We will hike to Camp I and return to the base camp, as it is best to remain active rather than idle on acclimatization days. We will also check our climbing gear to ensure everything is in order. We will spend the night at the base camp, resting and preparing for the next stages of our journey.

  Maximum Altitude : 4,550 meters

Day 9: Base Camp to Camp I

We will leave the base camp and start hiking on a light grassy trail and over some boulders as we make our way towards Kyajo Ri Summit. The trail will gradually ascend over rocky surfaces and boulders. After a couple of hours of walking on a steep trail, we will reach Camp I. Our campsite will be on level ground with a water source nearby from a frozen lake at the base of a glacier. We will spend the night at Camp I, enjoying the unique surroundings.

  Maximum Altitude : (5,200 meters)

Day 10: Acclimatization Day at Camp I

Today, we will dedicate ourselves to further acclimatization to prepare for the ascent of Kyajo Ri Peak. This day will allow us to gain confidence in our climbing abilities and ensure we are ready for the summit push. We will check our climbing gear again and make any necessary adjustments. Spending the night at Camp, I will ensure we are well-rested and prepared for the next day’s climb.

  Maximum Altitude : 5,200 meters

Day 11: Camp I to Camp II

We will begin our ascent from Camp I to Camp II, navigating technical climbing routes that involve mixed face slopes up to 55 degrees. This part of the climb will take us through a glacier, adding to the challenge. Since Camp II is situated near the glacier, we will find ample ground to set up our camp for the night. From this vantage point, we will be able to view the climbing route for our Kyajo Ri expedition scheduled for tomorrow. We will spend the night at Camp II, where you can enjoy the impressive views and prepare for the summit climb.

  Maximum Altitude : 5,700 meters

Day 12: Summit and Back to Camp II

We will start our summit attempt early in the morning at around 3 a.m. After a light breakfast, we will face light rock climbing as we traverse rocky surfaces and boulders. The trail will lead us to a glacier that presents some climbing challenges. As we progress, the trail will steepen, and we will encounter both snow and ice climbing. The final push to the summit will be along a sharp and steep snow edge. Once we reach the summit of Kyajo Ri, we will be rewarded with splendid views of numerous surrounding mountains. After enjoying the breathtaking panorama, we will return to Camp II for the night.

Day 13: Trek to Base Camp

Following our successful summit of Kyajo Ri, we will trek back to Kyajo Ri Base Camp. The return journey will be somewhat easier as we will be familiar with the terrain. Once we reach the base camp, you can relax and soak in the stunning mountain views.

Day 14: Base Camp to Namche Bazaar

We will begin our journey back to Namche Bazaar, retracing our steps and cleaning up the base camp. Our route will take us through Mende and Thame before reaching Namche Bazaar. We will spend the night in Namche, where you can unwind and celebrate the completion of our trek.

Day 15: Namche Bazaar to Lukla

The trail from Namche Bazaar to Lukla will involve a steep descent, requiring us to muster strength in our sore legs to navigate the rocky terrain. We will cross suspension bridges and the Dudh Koshi River before the trail gradually becomes easier. By the time we reach Lukla, we will have completed our trekking journey.

Day 16: Fly Back to Kathmandu

We will board an early morning flight back to Kathmandu, concluding our climbing expedition. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will have the rest of the day to explore the vibrant Thamel area. You can spend time strolling through the bustling streets or shopping for souvenirs. In the evening, we will gather for a farewell dinner hosted by the  team. We will spend the night in Kathmandu, resting and preparing for the final day of our journey.

Our friend’s trip to Kyajo Ri Peak was a mixed bag. While the scenery was captivating and the experience was unique, the expedition was more challenging than we anticipated. The technical aspect and high altitude made our climb difficult. But our climbing guide changed every impossible aspect into possible. The climbing staff, and the porters all were hardworking. Merci to the entire team of Naata for your valuable assistantship.

The climb to Kyajo Ri was full of stunning sights on each turn but the climb was steeper and more technical than I foresaw. The harsh weather conditions made the ascent more difficult, yet the climbing guide and team of Naata Travel and Adventure did their best to assist me. The climb is an excellent choice for Adventure. Yet, I’d recommend doing more preparation if you’re not used to high-altitude climbs.

The steep ascents and technical sections made my peak climbing a bit challenging but I did my best and was able to succeed in my climb.  The guide and support staff of Naata Travel and Adventure were excellent, providing invaluable assistance and ensuring our safety. I would suggest this agency and peak climbing for adventure seekers in Nepal’s Himalayas.

Best Season to Climb Kyajo Ri Peak

The best times to climb Kyajo Ri Peak are during the Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) seasons. Spring is ideal for trekking and expeditions in Nepal as it falls during the pre-monsoon period and offers moderate weather. During this time, the days are pleasantly cool, and the evenings bring just enough chill to enhance the adventure without discomfort.

Autumn is another excellent season for climbing, though it is the busiest time in the Himalayas. This period coincides with various Nepalese festivals, providing a unique cultural experience along with your trek. Autumn gives clear and unobstructed views of the mountains along with the vibrant landscape colors, adding to the beauty of the trek.

In contrast, the monsoon season (June to August) and the winter months (December to February) are less favorable for climbing Kyajo Ri Peak. The monsoon brings heavy rainfall, causing landslides and making the trails slippery and challenging. Similarly, winter welcomes heavy snowfall with freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall.

Meals and Accommodations

On the trail, you will primarily enjoy Nepalese and Tibetan-inspired dishes. Meals will feature local specialties such as dal bhat tarkari (lentil rice and curry), momos (dumplings), then thukpa (noodle soup), and rikikur (potato pancakes). Additionally, we also offer some international cuisines. This includes porridge, oatmeal, pasta, pancakes, and spaghetti to cater to different tastes.

Accommodation during the expedition will be mainly in teahouses or local lodges along the trail. While these teahouses are essential and offer limited amenities, the warm reception and hospitality of the locals will enhance your experience. Rooms will be shared between 2-3 people, and bathrooms will be communal. From the base camp of Kyajo Ri, we will stay in tented camps, providing a more rugged but authentic mountain experience.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is essential for undertaking any adventure activity in Nepal. It is a mandatory requirement to ensure safety and coverage during your expedition. While Naata Trek and Tours do not provide travel insurance, you must obtain a comprehensive policy on your own.

If you are ever planning on getting travel insurance, we recommend one that covers all necessary aspects of your trip. This includes high-altitude rescue and medical emergencies. You will have peace of mind with the best travel insurance from a reputed company. Thus, you can enjoy the overall trek without any worry. This step ensures you are well prepared for any unfortunate situation or emergency.

Kyaji Ri Trek Route

The usual route for climbing Kyajo Ri Peak is from the south face, less prone to hazards like rockfalls or avalanches than other routes. This climb involves a mix of rock, snow, and ice on some steep sections. Due to its mixed climbing nature, the Kyajo Ri summit route is often likened to Ama Dablam’s. There are two camps above the Base Camp before reaching the summit: Camp I at 5,350 meters and Camp II at 5,700 meters.

The actual climb begins after final preparations at the base camp. The journey from the base camp to Camp I is a long, non-technical walk over rough terrain. The climb to Camp II, though short, involves navigating scree and boulders from Camp I. From Camp II to the summit, there are 12 snow and ice pitches, including two steep pitches with a 60% gradient just below the summit.
