Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek also popularly known as Lo- Manthang trek is a rare and priviledged opportunity to get the real insight into the life of mountain people of Nepal. Upper Mustang Trek offers a spectacular trekking experience in the remote trans-himalayan mountain region of Nepal. In lot many ways, trekking into the upper Mustang Area is similar to trekking into Tibet, which geographically is part of it.

The Last Forbidden Kingdom, Upper Mustang, didn’t open for tourist until 1990s. This region was part of the Tibetan Kingdom of Gungthang until 1830’s. Mustang is a land where the soul of man is still considered to be as real as the feet he walks on. Although the land is almost treeless and the landscape barren but there is a different delight which fills the heart. Throughout the trek we admire the peculiar tree-less landscape, rocky trails and picturesque views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and other Himalayas. The fabled medieval wall city of Lo Manthang still remains a kingdom within a kingdom, full of culture and religious heritage.

This 17- day Upper Mustang Trek begins with tours of UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swoyambhunath and Kathmandu Durbar Square). Then we head to Pokhara, a scenic drive of about 7-8 hours and fly to Jomsom the next day, where the real adventure embarks.

INTERESTING FACT

  • Mustang has maintained its status as a distinct principality until 1951.
  • There is no recorded early history of Lo Manthang.
  • The king of Lo Manthang still retains his title and has been given the honorary rank of colonel in the Nepalese Army.
